A map of McDonalds in the nation

This is an amazing map that shows where every single McDonald’s is in the 48 continuous states. From the original designer, Stephen Von Worley:
As expected, McDonald’s cluster at the population centers and hug the highway grid. East of the Mississippi, there’s wall-to-wall coverage, except for a handful of meager gaps centered on the Adirondacks, inland Maine, the Everglades, and outlying West Virginia.
For maximum McSparseness, we look westward, towards the deepest, darkest holes in our map: the barren deserts of central Nevada, the arid hills of southeastern Oregon, the rugged wilderness of Idaho’s Salmon River Mountains, and the conspicuous well of blackness on the high plains of northwestern South Dakota. There, in a patch of rolling grassland, loosely hemmed in by Bismarck, Dickinson, Pierre, and the greater Rapid City-Spearfish-Sturgis metropolitan area, we find our answer.
Between the tiny Dakotan hamlets of Meadow and Glad Valley lies the McFarthest Spot: 107 miles distant from the nearest McDonald’s, as the crow flies, and 145 miles by car!

Nike KD2's Velvet Hoop

I like the new design for Kevin Durant's shoe the KD2's.

Some of the Sonics players are straight killing me in this video.

Kevin Durant’s second signature shoe model called the KD2. This particular red patent leather version is the “Velvet Hoop” Nike KD2. Kevin Durant went by the name “Velvet Hoop” in Nike’s latest Hyperize commercial which can been seen after the jump.

We don’t know if these KD2’s are Velvet Hoop exclusives, but we do know that the KD2 may release next Spring? The question is, how many other colors?

Honda develops new personal mobility device U3-X

Honda has developed a new personal mobility technology, U3-X. It is a compact experimental device that fits comfortably between the riders legs, to provide free movement in all directions just as in human walking forward, backward, side-to-side, and diagonally. Honda will continue research and development of the device including experiments in a real-world environment to verify the practicality of the device.

This new personal mobility device makes it possible to adjust speed and move, turn and stop in all directions when the rider leans the upper body to shift body weight. This was achieved through application of advanced technologies including Hondas balance control technology, which was developed through the robotics research of ASIMO, Hondas bipedal humanoid robot, and the worlds first* omni-directional driving wheel system (Honda Omni Traction Drive System, or HOT Drive System), which enables movement in all directions, including not only forward and backward, but also directly to the right and left and diagonally. In addition, this compact size and one-wheel-drive personal mobility device was designed to be friendly to the user and people around it by making it easier for the rider to reach the ground from the footrest and placing the rider on roughly the same eye level as other people or pedestrians.

Key features of U3-X:

Free movement just as in human walking
1.Device control featuring application of balance control technology cultivated through ASIMO research:
The incline sensor detects the incline of the device based on the weight shift of the rider and determines the riders intention in terms of the direction and speed. Based on the data, precise control is applied to return the device to an upright position, which achieves smooth and agile movements and simple operation by weight shift only.

2.HOT Drive System (Omni-directional driving wheel system):
Honda developed the worlds first wheel structure which enables movement in all directions including forward, backward, side-to-side and diagonally. Multiple small-diameter motor-controlled wheels were connected in-line to form one large-diameter wheel. By moving the large-diameter wheel, the device moves forward and backward, and by moving small-diameter wheels, the device moves side-to-side. By combining these movements the device moves diagonally.

Compact size which fit between the users legs
3.Compact and innovative package:
The combination of the balance control technology and the HOT Drive System enabled the one-wheel style compact and innovative package of the device. In addition, the device adopts a light-weight monocoque body in which the foldable seat, footrests and body cover that also function as the frame are stored in the body of the device, achieving highly portable convenience.

Key specifications of the experimental model:
- Length×Width×Height(mm) = 315×160×650
- Weight = less than 10kg
- Battery Type = Lithium ion battery
- Operation time (with fully charged battery) = 1 hour

* Based on Hondas internal research

Teredos the Sea termites in the Hudson River

Today, I finally learned something interesting. The photos below were caused by sea termites. Luckily nobody was hurt but there seems to be a ton of them along the waterfront.

As one of my jobs it is to handle crisis in the City I work for and recently there was a park that had a collapse due to these worm-like creatures called "Teredos" which are considered to be the sea termites.

Because Teredos, aka shipworms, are clams. The adult body is worm-elongate and the shell is reduced to a pair of corrugated, crenelated rasps at the business end of the beast. They tunnel through wood but feed in the ordinary clam way by filtering water drawn through a siphon. The wood is shelter rather than food. Since they don't actually consume the wood they bore through, preservatives like creosote mainly hinder only the colonizing larvae.

Interestingly they somehow percieve the presence of other shipworm tunnels and the limits of the wood -including bolts, nails, etc.- and avoid them. Thus, even though an individual shipworm's tunnel may be convoluted and tortuous, it is nowhere breached and is open to the outside only at the site of initial penetration. There are a number of different species, with the ones of most economic significance having been transported worldwide long ago via the worm-riddled hulls of wooden ships.

Mark Ecko talks about not living in Fear in the United States

Marc Ecko discusses how he tagged Air Force One, here's the video footage below:

YouTube Graffiti Celeb Gets Jail Time for High-Wire Hijinx

According to the LA Times, police identified Buket, aka Cyrus Yazdani, arrested him in May, and then sentenced him on Thursday to almost 4 years in prison, ordering him to pay over $100,000 in restitution for damaging public property. While Yazdani was obviously breaking the law, the sentence does seem somewhat harsh, particularly considering other YouTube related arrests that involved (alleged) budding serial killers, farting-on-food, and even rape.

In this instance, rather than documenting his outlandish act to gain some e-cred, Buket probably should have turned to Banksy, for guidance. It's definitely possible to be a highly successful and respected vandal, while still maintaining a closely-guarded sense of anonymity and mystery.

Transparency and Connectivity in the 21st Century

NY Times columnist Thomas Friedman and LRN CEO Dov Seidman discuss transparency and connectivity in the 21st century at the National Press Club

LBJ free agent coming to NYC or NJ?

The venue billed it as “Basketball City” and indeed, it accurately portray yesterday’s More Than A Game Community Day here in New York City as hundreds of volunteers, staff members, and thousands of basketball fans converged along the East River on the Lower East Side. Hosted by Nike and Nike Basketball, the event highlights NBA star LeBron James and More Than A Game, the documentary film about LeBron, his 4 teammates and coach Dru Joyce’s climb to the national high school basketball championship.

Stepped into the cavernous building and you could actually visualize the definition of “Basketball City”. The centerpiece is a full-on basketball court in regulation dimension, where local teams, such as Gauchos and Metro Hawks, played. Just off to its side are smaller courts for quick pick-up games, along with feedback and instructions from Nike staffers. Flanking the courts, venue set-up “kiosks” for attendees to participate, each designated by a large signage created by the iconic graffiti crew, the Bronx-base TatsCru

Activities included:

Network hub for updating your social network page
NIKEiD design stations
Nike retail store
Icon Interactive “blue screen” program that will edited you into the More Than A Game clips
DJ Scratch Academy where you could burn your own sample CD with help from a pro-DJ
EA Sports NBA Live gaming stations
Shoe whitening service
Barber shop with free cuts
Free giveaway counter
Temporary tattoo shop

Check out Lebron discussing his free agent next year.
